Choosing the right sanitizer for your hot tub is essential for keeping the water clean, safe, and comfortable. The three most common options are chlorine, bromine, and saltwater systems—but they’re not all created equal. Here’s what you need to know about each one.
Chlorine Granules: The Recommended Choice!
We recommend using chlorine granules for hot tub sanitation. Chlorine works by breaking down bacteria and contaminants, ensuring your spa water stays clean. Here’s why chlorine granules are the best option:
- Full control – You can adjust how much chlorine is added based on your water’s needs.
- Fast dissolving – Granules dissolve quickly, sanitizing your hot tub effectively.
- Neutral pH – Unlike tablets, chlorine granules won’t cause extreme pH imbalances.
Avoid using chlorine tablets (pucks) in hot tubs. They contain extra binding agents like glue, which can damage your spa’s plumbing over time.
Bromine: A Decent Alternative
Bromine is another effective sanitizer that some hot tub owners prefer. It’s known for having a milder smell and being more stable in hot water. However, there are some drawbacks:
- Burns off at 115°F, making it last longer than chlorine (which burns off at 95°F).
- Requires a shock treatment to activate its sanitizing properties.
- Affects pH levels, meaning you may need to add more chemicals to keep water balanced.
- Incompatible with chlorine – If you switch between the two, a spa flush is required to prevent chemical damage.
- Health concern – Bromine can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some users, especially those with sensitive skin or respiratory issues.
Saltwater Systems: Not What You Think
Saltwater systems are often marketed as a “chlorine-free” alternative, but that’s a misconception. Saltwater creates chlorine through electrolysis, so your spa is still using chlorine to sanitize the water.
Why we don’t recommend saltwater systems for hot tubs:
- Corrosive to spa components, leading to costly maintenance.
- Requires extra chemicals – Salt increases pH, meaning you’ll still need balancing chemicals.
- May void your spa warranty due to long-term damage.
Other Sanitizers: Why We Don’t Recommend Them
• Minerals (Silver/Copper Systems): While they offer some antibacterial benefits, they aren’t strong enough alone and need chlorine or bromine to be fully effective. Copper can also stain your spa and turn water green.
• Chlorine Tablets: As mentioned, these contain binders that can damage your spa’s internal components over time.
The Verdict: Use Chlorine Granules!
For the best balance of effectiveness, safety, and ease of use, chlorine granules are the way to go. They dissolve quickly, give you control over sanitizer levels, and help keep your spa water clean without damaging its components. If you prefer bromine, it’s a solid alternative—but be prepared for extra maintenance to balance your water chemistry.
